New year. New places. New ambitions. Not resolutions; they’re only made to go belly up after the first month.
No, my 2014 is all about embracing budget travel and spending less on clothes and booze. It is about showing anyone who still hasn’t realised that jet-setting to some random European city for the weekend is as easy as pie and – as is likely the case with many of you out there – even cheaper than a normal weekend out on the razz. What’s more, there’s a budget airline flying to just about any must-see or never-before-heard-of city in Europe these days. Frankly, it would be senseless not to take advantage, if – like me – you can’t get enough of new places.
I probably see close to twelve new places per year anyway, but this year I’m going to be better organised. One a month I tell you. And that is a promise (to myself).
Unlike most other bloggers who’ve committed themselves to the #Take12Trips project, such as Lucy of On The Luce and Lindsey of Chasing The Wild, I live outside of the UK, so in theory I am actually closer to the rest of Europe. However, many far-flung or alternative European destinations are only reached by a direct flight from Britain, which is a pain, but it won’t stand in my way.
So, in no particular order, destinations on my travel hit list for 2014 – so far – are…
That I still haven’t been is inexcusable. This sad, sad truth will be no more as of February, I hope.
I’m told that it is the gastronomic capital of France, so that’s happening.
It will probably be reserved for Oktoberfest, which – bizarrely – takes place in September. Fingers crossed I’ll be able to catch Bayern Munich in action too.
This is somewhere that I have seen plenty of already, but endeavor to return to in order to see Real Madrid – one of the world’s greatest football teams – knock the stuffing out of somebody. Yes, another football match.
While I am fully aware of its stag do allure, it is somewhere I know nothing about at his point, other than that it is widely seen as an extremely underrated European city. And blog posts like this and this make it all the more appealing.
The Portuguese capital has been calling me for years, and is too close by not to visit. A date is already set!
Morocco would fascinate me because of where I live now: Granada. Here, there is a huge Arabic influence on the city, which was embedded when the Moors ruled centuries ago. I would love to see Arabic culture in an Arabic country.
Somewhere in Greece
Somehow, I have never been to Greece, and thanks to Clare of Need Another Holiday I’ve now got a hankering that just won’t go away. Santorini? Mykonos? Athens? All suggestions welcome!
It’s still just a movie land to me, and that needs to change. The big apple would be the most expensive and most difficult trip to take, but definitely my biggest success if it happens. Fingers crossed. I’ve signed up to cheap flight alerts…
Of course things will probably get bumped down or added to the list, so at this stage there is no real way of knowing where and when I will be going (except for Paris and Lisbon).
If you want to take part in the #Take12Trips project just post something similar to this on your own blog, if you have one. If not then take pictures of where you go and tweet them with the hashtag #Take12Trips.
2014 is going to be a good year.
