8 Brilliant Liverpool Music Festivals

August 5, 2016

Liverpool has always been a city synonymous with music. Legends like The Beatles both lived here and used the city as inspiration for many of their best-selling songs and albums. Now representing its status as a UNESCO City of Music, Liverpool hosts a great list of music festivals each year.

New and exciting events are constantly added to the list so I have shortlisted 8 of the best musical events that are taking or have taken place in Liverpool this year, as a guide for any 2017 would-be attendees.

Best Liverpool Music Festivals:

#1 Sound City

Voted the UK’s number one urban festival, Sound City is an event that welcomes stars of and start up acts to the city of Liverpool. The likes of Ed Sheeran and Florence and the Machine have taken to the stage in previous years and this year my festival season kicked off with amazing performances from 2 Many DJ’s and The Coral. When starting your festival season next year make sure Sound City is on your radar.

When: May 2017 (Dates TBA)

Where: Bramley-Moore Dock, Liverpool

#2 Africa Oye

For a taste of the exotic, Africa Oye is a music festival with a difference. Welcoming everybody to this free festival celebrating African art, music, food and culture, Africa Oye is a vibrant feast with something for everybody to enjoy. Taking place in Sefton Park annually, attendance has grown in leaps and bounds during the 24 years it has been running. Next year will be an extra special celebration to mark their 25th anniversary – definitely one not to miss.

Where: Sefton Park, Liverpool

#3 LIMF (Liverpool International Music Festival)

Liverpool’s answer to Glastonbury, LIMF (Liverpool International Music Festival) is held in Sefton Park and draws crowds in their thousands. This year’s headliners were none other than dynamic DJ’ing duo Sigma who rocked the stage with a whole host of other crowd-pleasing acts. Held over three long days during summer, LIMF is one to add to your calendar for next year. Oh and did I mention its free?

#4 Liverpool Pride

We have just enjoyed Liverpool Pride – the hottest event to take over the city of Liverpool each year. This year saw a bigger, bolder and altogether louder celebration of love and support for the LGBT community. The streets were filled with colour and some brilliant live music, with stages across the city. Even our most beautiful buildings joined the party as they came out of the shadows to light up the night bathed in the glorious rainbow colour. Every year I make sure I can attend this event, as the city comes together unified under an important message.

When: July 2017 (dates TBA)

#5 Liverpool Loves

Liverpool truly does love, so much so that we have a festival to celebrate the fact. Our World Heritage Waterfront hosted Liverpool Loves this year and welcomed live music onto 6 stages and tents. We saw local sensations The Hummingbirds return to their home turf and give an excellent performance. Myself and a few of my pals got a great view of the whole affair from the roof top terrace at 30 James Street – Home of the Titanic, my absolute favourite Liverpool cocktail bar and a great spot for catching anything on at Pier Head. After some delicious drinks we went and joined in with the crowds for one of the loveliest Liverpool music festivals going!

When: 4th, 5th and 6th August

Where: Pier Head, Liverpool

#6 Folk Festival on the Dock

A brand new festival coming to Liverpool’s historic Albert Dock, Folk on the Dock is sure to become a regular addition to Liverpool’s huge list of annual events. Acts taking to the stage are the biggest names in the folk genre, such as Henry Priestman and The Christians. Visitors can expect great music as well as delicious food and drink form local and independent vendors. We’re sure this will be a fabulous festival that will undoubtedly draw a massive crowd, ready for an epic folk-filled jamboree.

When: 26-29th August 2016 – returning August 2017

Where: Albert Dock, Liverpool

#7 Creamfields

An event that will have you reaching for the lasers is Creamfields, held in Daresbury Park. Here, the biggest names in all genres of dance music flock to a field to put on a spectacular display of amazing electronic music. The pyrotechnics and light displays are an attraction unto themselves! Attendees flock in their thousands to join in a weekend of non-stop partying all day and all night. This year the organisers have created a new venue for revellers to enjoy in the shape of the Steelyard. I’ve got my ticket and am in for the 3 day long run, and I can’t wait.

When: 26-29th August 2016 – returning August 2017

Where: Daresbury Park, Liverpool

#8 Fusion Festival

Still to take place this year but always a smash hit on the Liverpool festival circuit is Fusion Festival. Bringing in those chart topping sensations we all know (and secretly love). This year party-goers will be dancing along to hits from Olly Murs, Tinie Tempah and Jason Derulo to name but a few of the UK’s leading pop artists. Fusion Festival is a family-friendly event that welcomes visitors of all ages. For two days, punters can fill their boots with great food and great (for some) pop music taking place on Liverpool’s Otterspool Promenade.

When: September 3-4th 2016 – returning September 2017

Where: Otterspool Promenade, Liverpool

In a city that will always be revered for its musical accomplishments, it’s time to choose which of the Liverpool music festivals you’ll be giving a go in 2017.
